The UK Expansion Worker visa is designed for individuals looking to establish a branch of their overseas business in the UK, provided it has not yet commenced operations in the country. To be eligible, applicants must hold a senior managerial or specialist position within the existing overseas business and meet specific criteria:

Possession of a valid certificate of sponsorship from the employer.

Prior employment with the employer outside the UK.

Occupation must fall within the list of eligible positions.

Receipt of a minimum eligible salary for the job role.

 

Holders of the UK Expansion Worker visa are permitted to stay in the UK for the shorter of the following two durations:

12 months from the commencement date of the job as stated in the certificate of sponsorship.

The period specified on the certificate of sponsorship, plus an additional 14 days.

Should individuals wish to extend their stay, they have the option to renew their visa for another 12 months. The maximum allowable duration on a UK Expansion Worker visa is 2 years.

 

However, it’s important to note that if an individual has spent time in the UK on this or similar visas, there might be limitations on the duration of their stay. Specifically, one can only reside in the UK for a total of 5 years within any 6-year period if they have previously held visas such as the Intra-company Graduate Trainee visa, Intra-company Transfer visa, Graduate Trainee visa (Global Business Mobility), Secondment Worker visa (Global Business Mobility), Senior or Specialist Worker visa (Global Business Mobility), Service Supplier visa (Global Business Mobility), or the UK Expansion Worker visa (Global Business Mobility).

In terms of permissible activities, those with a UK Expansion Worker visa can engage in the following:

  • Perform the job specified in their certificate of sponsorship for their sponsoring employer.
  • Pursue studies.
  • Bring eligible partners and children along as dependents.
  • Engage in voluntary work.
  • Travel in and out of the UK.

However, certain activities are restricted, including:

  • Application for most public benefits or the State Pension.
  • Changing jobs, unless the individual is eligible and updates their visa status.
  • Taking on a second job.
